butelka z oznaczeniem kaucji 0,50 zł – system kaucyjny w Polsce

Since October 1, 2025, the deposit system has officially been in operation in Poland. This is a major step toward environmental protection and increased recycling of beverage packaging.

This article is a summarized version of materials provided by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, available at systemkaucyjny.gov.pl.
We encourage you to visit the official website for brochures, posters, guides, and additional educational resources. Below is a concise overview of the most important rules.

What Is the Deposit System and Why Was It Introduced?

The deposit system is a simple mechanism designed to recover valuable materials – plastic, glass, and aluminum – instead of turning them into waste.

When purchasing a beverage in eligible packaging, the consumer pays a deposit, which can be refunded upon returning the empty container.

The main goals are:

  • reducing waste in the environment
  • lowering raw material consumption
  • promoting recycling and reuse

Poland now joins over 180 million Europeans already using similar systems.

What Packaging Is Included?

The system covers three types of beverage packaging:

  • plastic (PET) bottles up to 3 liters – deposit: 0.50 PLN
  • metal cans up to 1 liter – deposit: 0.50 PLN
  • reusable glass bottles up to 1.5 liters – deposit: 1 PLN

Each item included in the system is marked with a deposit symbol and deposit value.
The deposit is added at checkout and is not included in the product price.

Where Can You Return Bottles and Cans?

Returns can be made at:

  • stores larger than 200 m² (mandatory participation)
  • smaller stores that voluntarily joined the system
  • RVM deposit machines
  • collection points organized by system operators

No receipt is required – only a readable barcode and intact deposit marking.

How to Prepare Packaging for Return

To ensure acceptance and refund:

  • empty the container (no need to wash it)
  • keep the cap
  • do not crush or damage the label
  • ensure the barcode and deposit mark are readable

What Else Should You Know?

  • until the end of 2025, both deposit and non-deposit packaging will remain in circulation
  • the system does not include beverage cartons, dairy packaging, or single-use glass bottles
  • unclaimed deposits support system operation funding

Machines Supporting the Deposit System

More and more retail locations are equipped with RVM machines, enabling fast and convenient returns.

4VS machines are designed to fully support the system – they recognize packaging types, accept eligible containers, and issue receipts for deposit refunds.
This provides real operational support for stores and convenience for consumers.
